Pori Art Museum

Pori Art Museum is a contemporary art museum that is impactful and in touch with the times. Originality, uniqueness and belief in the importance of art in society are at the core of the museum’s activities. Originally serving as a customs warehouse and weighing room, the museum building is part of the architecturally significant old town centre of Pori built in the 19th century.

The 2026 exhibition programme brings together Finnish and international artists. The Contra Conservatio group exhibition, which will open in March, brings to the art museum’s Hall not only contemporary art but also the original ceiling frescoes painted by Akseli Gallen-Kallela for the Jusélius Mausoleum, which were saved from a 1931 fire that destroyed the other murals in the mausoleum. In the autumn, the art museum will host a major exhibition by British-Kenyan artist Grace Ndiritu, which includes not only Ndiritu’s own art but also works selected by the artist from the museum’s collections.

Pori Art Museum is based on the life’s work of professor Maire Gullichsen (1907–1990) and the collection of the art foundation bearing her name.

The exhibition Maire Gullichsen and the Turning Points of Modernism presents a collection of classics in new contexts, juxtaposed with collection pieces that have rarely been on display. Helene Schjerfbeck’s simple expression, Magnus Enckell’s and Ellen Thesleff’s colourful paintings, Sam Vanni’s abstract still life and Lars-Gunnar Nordström’s Constructivism are all milestones of Finnish art in the 1900s.

Poriginal is Pori Art Museum’s own gallery, which selects six exhibitions annually through an open call. Poriginal’s exhibitions focus on contemporary art. The public has free admission to the gallery’s exhibitions.
