Listen to birdsong and take part in monitoring the spring migration of birds on Pori’s nature trails
The City of Pori is participating in a bird monitoring project at the University of Jyväskylä, using the Migration Birds Spring app developed by the university. The free app identifies bird species based on the sound recording and offers users the opportunity to participate in citizen science. So join the migratory bird monitoring, and record the bird songs you hear!
Based on an artificial intelligence model, the Migration Birds Spring app identifies 263 species of birds in Finland. The recorded observations provide valuable research material on bird distribution and song activity in different areas and times. The app is used in several municipalities around Finland.
In Pori, bird monitoring is carried out on ten different outdoor trails with a total of more than 60 QR code recording points. The Migratory Bird Spring app scans the code and records a five-minute audio sample.
In Pori, the spring migration of birds is particularly impressive, and in the Meri-Pori area you can see many migratory birds resting on their way. The recording points are located on ten beautiful nature trails around the city, so hikers can combine birdwatching with nature walks. Pori’s nature trails offer stunning scenery and fresh air – the perfect time to relax and enjoy the sounds of nature. However, no previous knowledge of the species is required.
– The app can be used by anyone, and you don’t need to know the birds at all beforehand – the app helps you learn! You can make observations even on an evening walk in the local countryside, and at the same time get involved in citizen science, says Anne Salo, nature conservation supervisor.
