Industrial heritage on the West Coast Route

Experience Satakunta’s industrial heritage on the West Coast Route.

Satakunta has several interesting industrial heritage sites for visitors. The region is home to the West Coast Route, which is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The West Coast Route includes the Leineperi Ironworks, the Friitala Leather Museum, the Ahlström Ironworks, the Kauttua Ironworks and the Rosenlew Museum. The sites illustrate Satakunta’s industrial development from the ironworks era to today’s diverse industry. At the sites along the route and in their vicinity, visitors can find high-quality services and experiences, such as architecture, exhibitions, cultural experiences and accommodation, as well as restaurant and café services.

The history of industrial activity in Satakunta dates back to the 17th century, when the first sawmills and ironworks were established. Satakunta’s location on the Gulf of Bothnia has enabled important international trade connections and created opportunities for industrial development.

The West Coast Route is part of the national Industrial Heritage Route and the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), an international cultural heritage route of the Council of Europe, which includes over 300 member destinations in 30 countries. The websites of the Industrial Heritage Route and the ERIH make it easy to plan your industrial heritage tour in Satakunta and Finland and across Europe!
